Trusting God's Promise

Abraham, who is known as the father of many nations, is a good example to follow.

Take a look at Romans 4:1-25

1What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? (Since Abraham founded the Jewish nation, how did he recieve salvation from God?) 2For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. (If he recieved salvation by doing good deeds,  he would have had something to brag about, but that was not God’s way of granting someone a future home in heaven after they died.) 3For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (Abraham recieved salvation because of his faith.) 4Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. (If people had to do good works in order to recieve salvation, it wouldn't be a gift.) 5But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (But people are counted as righteous (which means they recieve salvation by having their sins erased and sinless in God's sight), not because of they did good deeds to earn it, but because of their faith in God to forgive their sins.) 6Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, (David also described how very happy people are when declared righteous because of their faith instead of working to try to earn their salvation:)

7Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. (This is referring to people who have had their sins erased.)

9Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. (Abraham was counted as righteous by God (had his sins erased) because of his faith, not because he was circumcised. This is the same with us.) 10How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. (Abraham was counted as righteous before he was circumcised.) 11And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: (When Abraham was circumcised, it meant that he already had faith and that God had already declared him to be righteous. 12And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. (Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised as well, but only if they have the type of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised.)

13For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. (God didn't promise that Abraham's descendants would occupy the earth because of his obedience to God's laws; God promised this because Abraham had a right relationship with God as a result of Abraham's faith.) 14For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: (If someone becomes an heir of Abraham if they obey God's law, then faith is not necessary, and God's promise is pointless.) 15Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. (Receiving salvation by never sinning is impossible, so the key is to have no law to break.)

16Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (The way to recieve salvation is by faith, and it is a free gift, not by living according to the law of Moses.) 17(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. (Abraham received salvation because he believed in the God who raises the dead and creates new things out of nothing.) 18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. (Even when it seemed impossible, Abraham kept believing that God would make him the father of many nations, because God said He would.) 19And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: 20He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; (Even when Abraham was about 100 years old and his wife was at her old age, he never wavered in believing that God would give him so many descendents. Not only this, his faith grew stronger, and this brought glory to God.) 21And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. (He was 100% sure that God is able to do whatever he promises.) 22And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. (Because Abraham believed that God would give him so many descendents, God erased his sins and counted him as righteous.) 23Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; (When God did this for Abraham, it was recorded for our benefit as well. It shows us that God will also erase our sins if we understand that He is the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.) 25Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (We need to 100% believe that Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead if we want God to make us right with Him (erase our sins and let us into heaven when we leave this world).)

While this is true (faith in Jesus is the only way we can have our sins erased), repentance, discipleship, and Jesus' Lordship is involved in salvation. If you have read chapters 1, 2, 4-9, 16, 20, and 34 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com you will see repentance, discipleship, and Jesus' Lordship and their relation to believing that Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead.
